Boys shut out State College, 45-0, girls dominate Doylestown, 45-7, will travel to Pittsburgh this weekend
DOWNINGTOWN — Look out Pittsburgh, here comes Unionville!
Both the boys and girls rugby teams from Unionville High School advanced Sunday to the state final four with dominating victories in matches held at Bishop Shanahan High School.
The boys easily handled State College, cruising to an easy 45-0 win, while the girls dispatched Doylestown, 45-7. The boys will go up against St. Gregory’s Academy in Saturday’s semi-final, while the girls will battle Chester County rival Downingtown. The championship games will be played Sunday.
In the boys’ game, what was a tense, close match in the first half turned into a dominating performance by the Indians (11-1-1).
A first half try by Colin Roberts gave Unionville a narrow 5-0 lead at the intermission.
But then the Indians came out like a team possessed in the second half, scoring a barrage of tries. Stephen Lange scored a pair within the first 10 minutes of the second half and five minutes later, Tim Christopher got the first of his three tries on the day, with three Chris Baker conversions, giving the Indians a quick 26-0 lead.
Ethan Fish added another try and then Christopher added two more for the final score.
