Spahr announces run for 160th District

Cathy Spahr addresses supporters during her campaign kickoff last week.

UPPER CHICHESTER —  Cathy Spahr, an environmentalist, political activist, and mother to twin sons Charlie and Julien, announced her campaign to unseat Steve Barrar, Pennsylvania State Representative for the 160th Congressional District this past week.

Spahr said she is running, “to fight for those without a voice and to bring government back to the people.”

As the founder of We Speak for the Trees, her goal is to hand deliver copies of Dr. Suess’ The Lorax, to every member of the US Congress and Pennsylvania Assembly.  The purpose is to raise awareness of the consequences of not standing up for the environment with those with the power to impact legislative protections.

Spahr is passionate about the need to develop and implement effective programs to tackle the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, Pennsylvania had the fourth highest rate of death due to drug overdose in 2016 (37.9 per 100,000).  She speaks from personal experience which she will share at the campaign launch.

She has three years of experience in constituent services for Newtown Township and is an active member of the Upper Chichester Democratic Committee.  She notes that she has a strong commitment to giving back to the community — and used her campaign kickoff to ask for canned food to be collected and donated to Kennett Area Community Services Food Cupboard located in Kennett Square, which were delivered Thursday.
