Following a thrilling, bases-loaded 5-3 loss to number one seeded Upper Merion, the Unionville U-14 girl¹s softball team took second place trophy in last weekend’s 23rd Annual Gary Beal Memorial Tournament in Audubon.
The URA Senior Softball Hornets utilized exceptional defense and timely hitting to defeat all of its opponents en route to Monday night’s championship game with the Upper Merion. The Upper Merion team had outscored opponents 49 to 11 and were heavy favorites coming into the final game with the Hornets.
Both teams fought extremely hard in a game that featured several lead changes. In front of a large away crowd the Hornets made spectacular plays around the diamond and in the outfield, with a couple key put-outs at home. Down by two runs with bases loaded in the last inning the Hornets lost their chance for a major upset due to several strong defensive plays by Upper Merion squad.
“Don Carlino and I have coached this same group of girls for several years and we are so proud of how they’ve all grown into such skilled players and great people,” said Dean Musser, coach of the Hornets. “While the loss was tough, the heart, effort, and sportsmanship they displayed revealed they were champions in their own right.”
