Chic and comfy? Yes, it’s possible

By Kelly Hockenberry, Columnist, The Times

Comfortable CAN be chic. Thanks to the endless options in the world of “athleisure” wear, being practical can also be fashionable.

If you are anything like me, especially on the weekends, I have a list as long as my arm of things to get accomplished during the course of a day. As much as I love to look fancy, it can feel a bit silly to show up for a 9am URA basketball game in a fur coat or to the Giant in a sequined sweater.  I know this….because I’ve done it. HOWEVER, I realize that (for most) this is absurd. Therefore, I am encouraging myself to embrace a more informal approach to couture that may integrate, more seamlessly, with the surroundings.

Not that I am succumbing to peer pressure or downgrading the attention to my appearance. It pains me that no one seems to want to get dressed up anymore. I firmly believe that spending all day in shapeless sweatsuits can take a toll on the psyche. But THIS new trend in performance wear is different. The selection has increased dramatically and the options are infinitely more flattering on the body. If you have never tried on a pair of high waisted leggings, you don’t know what you are missing! Trust me.

The extra incentive to consider this look is the increased likelihood that you will actually make it to the gym. Look cute AND sneak in some exercise. Win win.

What is the key to knocking this style out of the park? Accessories! Layering on a vest and scarf (like in the picture) elevates the outfit. It no longer looks like you just hopped off the treadmill.

Concerned that the cost is prohibitive? Not anymore! Sure, Lululemon still has quite the variety – if you don’t mind dropping one hundred bucks…but, you can find very reasonable (and adorable) alternatives at shops like TJMaxx, The GAP, and Old Navy.

What do you think? Is this a style that works for you? Please, leave your comments! Happy Weekend

I am so happy you said it! Yes – i teach Health + PE for a living so I am ALWAYS in athleisure wear. One thing I def so I put on a scarf! Scarves make things look a little more fancy AND I feel a little bit better. Not to mention my matching sneakers to everything I own 🙂 Happy Sunday!
