An East Marlborough native and Unionville High School graduate added to her collection of Paralympic medals with a win in the 1,500 meter wheelchair race in Rio De Janiero, Tuesday, as part of a U.S. sweep of the event.
Amanda McGrory — who won gold at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008 and competed in London in 2012 — won the race, leading teammates Tatyana McFadded and Chelsea McClammer to a U.S. 1-2-3 finish in the event.
McGrory — one of the world’s top wheelchair marathoners — is expected to be in the medal hunt in the 5,000-meter final, Thursday afternoon (4:30 p.m.).
A multi-sport star at the University of Illinois — McGrory has competed in three paralympics and a number of the world’s top marathon events, including New York and London. She now lives and trains in Illinois.
