Letter: Column unfairly politicizes Orlando shooting

To The Editor,

Letters1I recently read Mike McGann’s piece about why politicians should not offer their thoughts and prayers in the wake of a tragedy and that the Republican majority in Chester County “chose” the horrific acts that took place in Orlando, Charlestown, Sandy Hook and other places.

I can’t express how disappointed I am in your politicizing this tragic event.  I am deeply troubled by your comments about how Chester County Republicans “wanted” this to happen. For you to suggest that is an extreme disservice to your readers.

As someone who regularly reports on the news, I would hope that you would display some semblance of non-partisanship.  Up until now, I think you have, for the most part.

And now, while the bodies of the fallen victims have only just been identified and the families are experiencing unfathomable anguish, you choose to set aside your journalistic fairness and attack Chester County Republicans for this tragedy. Shameful.

The act of terrorism that occurred in Orlando is an absolute tragedy. It should not be used as an opportunity for you to blame Republicans and make a political point. I could take this opportunity to criticize the Obama Administration for not following up on the numerous warning signs and reports from co-workers and friends of the terrorist who killed our countrymen.  But I will refrain at this time out of respect for the deceased and their families.

This is a time of mourning and a time to celebrate the lives of those who lost their lives this past weekend that were cut all too short. As a reporter, your job is to report the news – not to push an anti-gun and anti-Republican agenda on your readers.

In times like these, let’s stop pointing fingers, have respectful discussions and work together for common-sense reform.

Val DiGiorgio

Chairman,

Chester County Republican Committee

I am with Steve and Mike . The ban on assault weapons expired under Mr. Bush. I believe the republican do not want to re-establish it because the NRA has them in their pocket!. It is a sad state of affairs when these things happen and the powers that be just want to take a moment of silence….bull. This is unacceptable.

Trying to wash your hands??? As I read this, I am watching one party try and get an amendment passed to prohibit those on the no-fly list to be able to buy guns in the Senate…oh, this is a very similar amendment that was voted down by your party just days after another horrendous shooting. The reason your party didn’t agree to this amendment was that the rights of someone put on the list by mistake, would be violated. For a party intent on restricting rights of others, this was a rich one. Also, just minutes ago, I saw a quote from your Presidential nominee saying he would talk to the NRA and see if there was a compromise he could reach with them about some gun measures…the NRA???? Says volumes about who he listens to. This is more of the same from your party…oh, it’s too soon to have any discussion, let;s mourn the dead. You guys should have that mourning routine down pat by now, you’ve had plenty of practice.
I’ll be 64 soon…only missed 2 primary elections in my lifetime, all here in Chester County. I was a registered Republican until a few years ago, when I decided that the hateful rhetoric coming from the party was not what I wanted to be a part of.
Mike wrote his opinion…I agree with it, you don’t. Fine. But you lost me, my wife, and my one son who just left the Navy after 10 years (and a K-9 handler in Afghanistan). My other 2 sons, although more conservative, did not vote in the Republican primary this spring, and said they will not vote for your party’;s nominee. More and more citizens have had it with your party;s inaction. and quite frankly, bullshit. You all politicize just about everything
So spin it all you want…take all the time to mourn…and watch the people in this country kick you all to the curb.
