WEST CHESTER — Did you know that nearly one-third of adults 65 years of age and older with natural teeth have untreated dental cavities in either the crown or the root of their teeth?

Did you know that the vast majority of payment for dental services is out-of-pocket for older adults, as Medicare does not cover cost for oral health services and dental care? These statistics are staggering and to help close the gap of dental health needs with this generation, Community Volunteers in Medicine has teamed up with Surrey Services for Seniors.

Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) hosted a ribbon cutting during the Open House of their mobile dental expansion program at Surrey Services for Seniors. Surrey Services for Seniors is the first of two mobile dental expansion programs that CVIM will implement this year.

Through this initiative, CVIM will provide hygiene and routine dental services at Surrey locations to people who currently have no access to or who cannot afford dental care. The program will increase access to preventative and restorative care and create a dental home for seniors who are unable to seek the care of a dental hygienist or dentist. Additionally, patients who need restorative and preventative dental care services not available through the mobile program will be able to receive this care at CVIM’s West Chester clinic.

This program has been made possible through CVIM’s partnership with the Independence Blue Cross Foundation.
