MIDDLEBURG, Va. — Two Chester County natives were part of 21 Foxcroft School students — including nine current seniors and one-third of last spring’s graduates — that earned 2015 AP Scholar designation from the College Board for extraordinary achievement on Advanced Placement Exams, Academic Dean Courtney Ulmer announced Monday.
This is the 12th consecutive year in which Foxcroft has seen the number of AP Scholars reach double digits.
Lucy Matz
The Chester County students to earn the honor were Lucy Matz of Coatesville and Meredith Dietz of Unionville. Matz is a senior at the school, while Dietz is now a freshman attending Northeastern University in Boston.
The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides academically-prepared students the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. Worldwide, only about 24 percent of the 2.3 million students who took AP Exams performed well enough to earn an AP Scholar Award.
Patia Fann of Purcellville, VA, led the way among the current seniors by earning the AP Scholar with Distinction Award for achieving an average of at least 3.5 (out of 5) on all the AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of the tests.
Eight members of the Class of 2015 also qualified for this lofty honor: Dietz, Phoebe Fei (Zhejiang, China, Carnegie-Mellon ), Arianna Gorman (Haymarket, VA;University of California, San Diego), Ja Yoon Lee (Seoul, Rhode Island School of Design), Molly Murphy (Middleburg, University of Virginia), Jolina Shen (Beijing, Emory University), Stephanie Zhang (Guangdong, China, Emory) and Amy Zhang (Beijing, UVA), ward University), Current seniors Matz, Julia Peters (Great Falls, VA) and Lillian Potter (Middleburg, Hollins University) were named AP Scholars with Honor after achieving scores of 3 or better on at least four tests with an average of 3.25 on all the AP exams they took.

Two recent graduates and seven members of the Class of 2016 achieved AP Scholar status by earning grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. Alumnae Hannah All, a freshman at UVA from Middleburg, VA) and Tory Weber (Waterford, VA, Boston College) were joined by current seniors Marias Blundell. More than 3,600 colleges and universities annually receive AP scores. Most four-year colleges in the U.S. provide credit and/or advanced placement for qualifying exam scores. Research consistently shows that students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams typically experience greater academic success in college and have higher college graduation rates than students who do not participate in the Advanced Placement program.
