Snow closes schools, makes slick highways

Both county political parties forced to postpone annual conventions

SnowplowRoughly a half foot of snow blanketed much of Chester County overnight, closing schools and some businesses — and postponing both county political parties’ annual conventions, this after a bout of extreme cold temperatures — some of the coldest in the region in two decades.

Although the snow wrapped up Tuesday morning, weather remains a concern around the county as a new frigid blast of air is expected to hit the area Thursday, bringing a new bout of sub-zero temperatures, Thursday and Friday, before another possible snow/rain event over the weekend, which could dump another 3 to 5 inches on snow on the area.

Public schools around the county were closed, with most colleges and universities in the county operating on a delayed basis.

With the extreme cold of recent days, some salting operations may be less effective than typical, leaving roadways slick in patches, so motorist are urged to use caution while driving, reduce speeds and allow extra time.

Still, Chester County got off comparably easy — some 300,000 people are without power as an ice storm coated the Carolinas — in comparison, PECO was reporting less than 100 Chester County residents were without power as a result of the storm.

Although it has been a colder than typical February so far and seems like warm weather may never return, the start of Spring is a little more than a month away, with the equinox on March 20 at 6:45 p.m.
