The wrestling team at Charles F. Patton Middle School won the Chester County middle school title earlier this month and completed a perfect 11-0 — a remarkable turnaround from a squad that one just one match in 2013-14.

EAST MARLBOROUGH — The Charles F. Patton Middle School Wrestling Team completed a very successful 2014 – 2015 season going 11 – 0.

The season culminated on Saturday Feb. 7, with the Hawks winning the Team Title at the Chester County Challenge which was held at Downingtown West High School.

The team entered this season coming off a 1 – 10 campaign during the 2013 -1 2014 season.   The transformation was achieved after adopting a “Team-first” mentality, hard work in the practice room and a dedication to system the new coaching staff put in place. We had the following wrestlers going undefeated on the season and capturing a league title – Jacob Lehman, Tyler Mousaw and Grant Astin. Wyatt Maguire went undefeated during the regular season and captured 3rd place at the CCC.

The new coaching staff was comprised of Head Coach Bill Taylor and Assistants Joe Coursey and Doug Mousaw. With over 10 years of coaching experience, Taylor’s system was able to maximize the talents of the wrestlers while building strong wrestling basics. Coach Coursey’s ability to teach-up the new wrestlers and guide them through the basics was instrumental in their young careers. Coach Mousaw’s attention to detail and strong work ethic were a guiding force and had an immediate and direct impact on the Team as a whole.

Patton entered the League Championship – Chester County Middle School Challenge – with a cobbled line-up as several members of the varsity line-up were out due to illness or injury. The Hawks also gave up two weight classes due to no wrestlers at the 75 and 80 pound weight classes. In middle school there are 18 weight classes, Patton entered 16 wrestlers out of 18 weight classes. The team was able to place 11 out of those 16 wrestlers in the top 4 of the CCC.

Patton had four first places, one second place, three third place and three fourth place finishers. The break down is below. The Hawks also had one JV wrestler who wrestled in the JV tournament (first ever CCC JV tournament) and he went 3 – 0.

Great formula for success: Team-first – Hard work in practice – Dedication to solid coaching staff & system. Staying humble and true to these tenets and having great respect for humanity, kindness and decency can help you to overcome llfe’s obstacles and propel you to success in all phases of your life. Congratulations to my friend Grant Astin and to the entire Hawks organization (athletes, coaches, parents & supporters). l
