YMCAs to celebrate Healthy Kids Day

National event aims to keep children moving, learning

imageOn Saturday, April 26, area YMCAs will celebrate Healthy Kids Day, a potpourri of free events throughout the community to inspire kids to keep their minds and bodies active.

From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., YMCA of the Brandywine Valley and YMCA of the Upper Main Line Y branches will feature games, healthy snacks, arts and crafts, fitness and/or dance demonstrations, and more to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home, a YMCA news release said.

YMCA Healthy Kids Day is the Y’s national initiative to get more kids moving and learning, so they can keep up the habit all summer long – a critical out-of-school time for kids’ health. Research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, kids fall behind academically. Kids also gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year, the release said.

The Brandywine YMCA in Coatesville will host its events on the fields behind the Y. Jennersville YMCA will celebrate the day in Downtown Oxford on South 3rd Street, between Market and Hodgson. Kennett Area YMCA will head to downtown Kennett Square on Broad Street, between Cypress and Mulberry Streets. The West Chester Area YMCA and Oscar Lasko Youth Program Center will host their festivities together at West Chester East High School. Lionville Community YMCA in Exton and Upper Main Line YMCA in Berwyn will be hosting events at their branches.
